Biren Kumar Basak, son of Bankabihari Basak, was born in Gharinda, Tangail (East Pakistan, now Bangladesh) in 1951 in a weaver family. His father Bankabihari Basak was a Master Weaver of Tangail and Jamdani sarees.

Biren Basak was only 8 when he started learning how to weave Tangail sarees on a pit loom using cotton yarn borrowed from his father. At 12, Biren began weaving of Tangail and Tangail Jamdani sarees using attachments like the Jacqurad. (The borders of traditional Tangail sarees consist of lotus, lamp and vine patterns besides the popular fish scale patterns.

Under his visionary guidance, many weavers of the Fulia area (about 300) has reached great heights against stiff competition from the powerloom sector. Under his leadership, the weavers have been able to stay ahead of the competition. Biren likes to experiment with handloom and design and he is very attuned to the changing tastes in fashion. His clients include Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, the late Hemant Mukharjee (singer), Moushumi Chatterjee (actress), Soumitra Chatterjee (actor), Pupul Jayakar (the driving force behind the revival of the handloom industry during the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s time), Aparna Sen (actress and film director), and many others.
